Aamir Khan plays Rancho, who has come from the village to Delhi for higher education. He has an ambition to become an engineer despite his illiteracy. "Rancho" is a nickname given to him by his friends because of his passion for wrestling, although he does not have knowledge about wrestling. Kareena Kapoor plays Pia, who hails from a middle-class family yet she has decided to study further even after getting admission into the medical college just because her parents expect her to do so. Her parents are played by Boman Irani and Manu Rishi Chadha. Raghu is the main protagonist of the story. A college dropout, he comes from a middle-class family and is a fan of wrestling. He feels that his passion for wrestling might help him in his engineering studies as he loves science and feels that it will be easy to learn from those who have been through it. His mother feels that her son's inability to study properly will hinder his chances of becoming a good engineer and she does not wish for him to continue studying after his first year because she cannot afford to further support Rancho's enrollment in college.
